Steve Nakamura
Born in 1973 in Los Angeles, California. A graduate of London’s Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design. He lives and works in Tokyo.
Since 2015, he has been the annual main visual art director for the Tokyo fashion department store, Laforet Harajuku. He has also creative directed/art directed campaigns for Shiseido, Nike, Parco and others. From 2011 (debut) to 2016, he was the CD art director for the pop icon, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. In 2016, idea magazine published a 300 page special edition book of his artwork. 'Steve Nakamura has been committed to creating the originality of Kyary, and has produced an iconic visual expression that symbolises our era..' (idea magazine, 2016).
His work has been featured in T: The New York Times Style Magazine, Wallpaper* (UK), Nowness, idea magazine, NPR among others. And has also been featured in tie-ups with dyson, Sony, Disney, etc. He is also currently the cover creative director for Time Out Tokyo.
In 2016, he created a photography book with photographer, Norbert Schoerner about plastic food samples, ‘Nearly Eternal’, published by Claire de Rouen Books (London). ‘An extremely clever take on the relationship between the eye and the mind—what draws us in and what causes desire?’ (Nowness). His book launch/pop-up shop opened at Selfridges (London) and followed with a Tokyo book signing and exhibition at Bookmarc (Marc Jacobs).
